 Just walking around the courtyard...(open)
« Thread Started on Sept 3, 2008, 10:15pm »

Cosme had a small smile on his face as his legs kept moving in the forward direction. The courtyard was pretty big, so every time he made a complete circle around there was something different. He wasn't exactly new to the aspect of being alone, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it any more. Well, correction, he wasn't new to the aspect of being alone- in fact, at home he was surrounded by his friends. Just at Hogwarts each year was different, and he rarely saw his own friends. He kept his smile on his face, "Oh well! It is a new and ever fabulous year!"

Legs folded underneath, Fen sat perched atop the low courtyard wall and hummed loudly as he watched the throng of students drift in and out of the castle doors and wondered how everyone could look so busy. Sure there were things he should be doing: Care of magical creatures homework, practicing a few new transfiguration wand movements, or research the great Norwegian Giant Migration of 1740 for an upcoming History of Magic paper, but... eh.... no matter how hard he tried to get caught up (something he rarely did these days) Professors, with their innate ability to sense and quash impending free time, just kept assigning more and more work. Long ago happily resolved to remain a mediocre student, Fen, as a point of principle, refused to spend his last year fretting and hustling about for some letter grade that wouldn't even matter five years from now. After all, as the first and only non squib in three generations, he was slated to take over the Volucris family stables come graduation and a few P's or a T or two wouldn't change anything.

Stopping his tune (it was out of key anyway), he let out a small sigh of happiness as he made a mental note to imitate the worried, hurried faces of his fellow students during his next lecture as it might get him out of an assignment or at the very least inspire a bit leniency from a gullible Prof come grading time. After assembling a few good pictures in his head of what a "stressed-out student" should look like (Ravenclaws were prime examples), he practiced frowning, moaning, and letting out a few exasperated grunts as he leaned back on his satchel and stretched his arms to the side. Hair falling across his eyes, he pushed it back behind his ears and decided it was probably time for a trim. While he could always inspire some younger class men to do it, it was probably easier to simply fork over a few Knuts and sickles come next Hogsmeade's visit than having to track down whichever poor, unfortunate scamp chopped it this time; although, he had to admit in the end the latter means always turned out to be the most humorous. Perhaps some day, one his unorthodox experiments might start a trend... yet he certainly wasn't going to hold his breath.

Catching site of a solitary bumble bee yellow and black tie ambling about, Fenton hopped off the wall and tracked the younger Hufflepuff down. At last, someone cool to talk to, Fen thought as he gave Cosme a half-wave. "Salutations, Mon ami." Fen joked as he matched the upperclassman's stride. "Up to nothing much, huh?" he asked while pushing back his hair back and grabbing a sugar quill from his pocket.

(OOC: I assumed we're friends. Hope you don't mind. As both new Hufflepuffs we need to stick together.)

((Don't mind at all ^^))

"Why, hello dear Fen," Cosme smiled brightly at him. He then registered the second part of what he said and shook his head, "Ah, there is simply nothing to be up to in this fabulous school. I'm sure there are still wonderful adventures in secret places you and I are both ignorant of, but I feel instead of being like some other students who chose to go on grand adventures finding those secret treasures, the greatest treasure is here at school with beautiful princess and handsome princes- such as us, just getting on with the hustle and bustle of everyday wizarding lives."

No matter how absurd he sounded at times, he was always serious, and never sarcastic and never mocking. He had the same smile on his face as he continued to walk, happy that he now had some company.

Chomping down on the end of the quill, Fen couldn't help but chuckle at Cosme's trademark grandiose style. Fabulous, wonderful, handsome princes and princesses. Honestly, he thought to himself, who else talks like that? Though occasionally Fen liked to poke fun at ole Cosme's method of speech, he felt both of them knew it was just that... fun. After all, it wasn't as if Fen's common vernacular was beyond reproach either as Salutations, Mon Ami was pretty eclectic in and of itself.

"Anyone ever tell you're a bit odd?" He asked, while smiling and failing to mention he had just spent the last five minutes alone miming facial expressions atop a courtyard wall. His bid for normalcy was also further impaired by the fact he'd long ago removed his socks and had swapped the dress code required shoes with a favored pair of worn sandals despite it being completely out of season in mid Autumn. Tired of being constantly berated by Professors for being out of uniform, Fen had gotten into the habit back in his fourth to switching foot apparel between classes and had also figured out which teachers after three years were long past the point of caring and willing to let it slide.

"Odd?" Cosme turned his head to the side, he had heard a few people call him so, but never quite understood why, "Why?" he asked honestly. He only spoke how he had always known and he only acted as a gentleman would in accordance to how his father had taught him.

"I wouldn't worry too much," he said as he took the sugar quill out and used it to point for emphasis. "Odd... unusual....not usual," Fen's eyes rolled up in his head as he tried to think of another synonym but gave up after a second or two of fruitless effort. "Well anyway, what I'm getting at is usual is boring and, happily, you're not." He concluded and plopped the quill back in his mouth.

Forgetting about watching the other students in the courtyard, Fen loosened his tie and let his eyes wonder to the the nearby trees. The cool wind and the changing leaves of Autumn by far made the season his favorite. The former groundkeepers had done wonders planting trees out of the way of foot traffic yet keeping them in arm's reach for either summer shade or simple decoration. While the some leaves had fallen, the majority still lay suspended above waiting for a good solid breeze to send them spiraling towards the ground. Then they'd be gathered in leaf piles to stomp through or hurtle friends into. Last year, he'd seen a group of first years practicaly disappear into one of the bigger piles.

Fen sometimes missed those care free days. While in his own estimation he'd done a pretty decent job holding on to the levity of preOwl and Newt years, he wished more students would realise how much they'd miss the school when finally graduated and to just take some time off and enjoy it proper. He knew he would. Ah well, he thought, no sense missing it before it's gone.

"Tell me Cosme," he asked completly switiching gears back to school life, "Who're you dragging to the Halloween dance?"

"Ah, I fear I am not bringing anyone as of now for it seems no one can stand me long enough," Cosme smiled at him, "Can't say I blame them either. How about you, dear Fen, who are you bringing to the dance? For such a fine prince like yourself shouldn't have a hard time finding a date."
